You have probably heard about agave syrup or seen agave syrup on grocery store shelves. Agave nectar is 1.5 times sweeter than table sugar and it is derived from the same plant from which tequila is produced. Since it has come to market, agave syrup is also being used as an alternative natural sweetener instead of sugar, honey, and chemically derived sweeteners.

But what if you have diabetes or trying to lose weight? If so, and if you think you can consume as much agave as you want, that, unfortunately, is not true.

What is Agave?

Agave plant grows in the southwest region in the US. It is found in the northern part of South America too. Most agave sweeteners are produced from the salmeana or blue Webber agave plant. The source of agave syrup is highly important because some agave syrups can be highly processed or have added ingredients.

Calorie Count

Since organic blue agave sweetener is 1.5x sweeter than table sugar with a low glycemic index, individuals can consume less of this sweetener to curb sweet cravings while not consuming significant calories. Since agave syrup is still considered a sweetener, though, according to the American Diabetes Association, the use of agave nectar should be limited. Experts advise that it is better to consume naturally sweetened items at their recommended use levels.

Nutrient Facts of Agave

A teaspoon of agave nectar contains around 21 calories while a tablespoon of it has 60 calories. Agave syrup contains around 85 percent fructose.

Agave Syrup vs Sugar

Agave syrup is often touted as a healthier substitute for sugar and other traditional sweeteners. Please keep in consideration that this is for regulated consumption at recommended serving sizes. if consumed on a regular basis in high quantities, this nectar can lead to negative side effects such as weight gain.
